What are the meaning, origin and usage of the word catamaran?

This noun refers to a sailing boat with two parallel hulls (the floating parts) held together by a single deck (the flat surface).

Origin:

Catamaran has origins in the Tamil word kattumaram-from kattu (to tie or bind) and maram (wood). Kattumaram refers to a watercraft made by bringing together a few tree trunks, and works on the principle of buoyancy. Interestingly, kattumaram is mono-hulled, and the catamaran today is not made of wood but materials such as fibreglass.

Example:

 The larger catamarans are used commonly for island tours.
