I’m interested in Astronomy

I’m interested in Astronomy and would like to know about career options in this field.

Astronomers work in observatories and planetariums, and in universities or space research organisations. This is a small but popular field, so only those with quality education, ability and passion for the subject are likely to find a good position.

To pursue a career in astronomy, you should first go for B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics after 10+2 with science subjects. Then go for post-graduation in Physics/ Astrophysics/Astronomy. Most of the universities all over India offer these courses and the admission is usually on percentage basis.

Those with only a bachelor’s degree in Physics or Astronomy are not qualified to enter most physicist or astronomer jobs; you need to study beyond a master’s degree to work in applied research and development. It is common for astronomers to spend from three to six years in post-doctoral positions.

The study of astronomy is perfect for those who are inquisitive, like to ask why (for example, why we see things in the sky, why stars evolve) and have sound research skills. They need to have a good eye for detail, computer skills and excellent problem-solving skills.
