Which role made Charlie Chaplin famous?

When Charlie Chaplin made his first film in 1914 he was already well established as a music hall star. His successful career in his native Britain came to an end just before the First World War, when he went to America on tour. He stayed there and was soon working in films.

It was in Chaplin’s second film that he first introduced a character he called “the little fella”. The obstinate down-and-out who struggled against those in authority soon became known to the audiences as “the tramp”.

In 1915 Charlie Chaplin made a film called The Tramp. He shot to stardom. The character struck a sympathetic chord with the public and enormous success followed. The masterpiece of the tramp character is often thought to be a film called The Kid, Which was a full-length feature film. Even after 70 years the films of Chaplin’s tramp are still shown and delight their audiences.
