Who were the first men on the roof of the world?

When it was discovered that Mount Everest, in the Himalayas, was the tallest mountain on Earth men have wanted to climb it.

Many expeditions tried, but all had failed until 1953. In that year the two great British organisations, the Alpine Club and the Royal Geographical Society joined forces to organise an expedition to conquer Everest. Equipped with the most up to-date climbing apparatus, the expedition set out.

On May 29, the New Zealander, Edmund Hillary, and the Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, reached the summit of Mount Everest. At last men were standing on “the Roof of the World”.
