Skully P-1 helmet packs a heads-up display, rear-facing camera and Android to keep motorcyclists safe

The Skully P-1 is the first helmet with a digital head-up display (HUD). The one-inch screen sits at the right hand edge of the driver’s field of view and projects a live feed from a 180-degree rear-facing camera, eliminating the blind spots that plague other helmets. The system can also broadcast turn-by-turn directions and pairs with a smartphone to read back text messages, so the rider’s eyes can stay glued to the road. It also packs a micro controller running a customized version of Android to deliver navigation and video information to the HUD. It takes voice commands so that riders can see where they’re going or what’s behind them, hands-free. The P-1 has a fin mounted atop the helmet that houses the hardware, plus GPS, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, gyro, compass and a rechargeable battery.

While the P-1 is built to work without a data connection, the system has been designed to pair up with a smartphone so that it can give riders real-time traffic updates. And the helmet retrieves software updates via WiFi. Generally speaking, the helmet’s been designed so that its feature set can be expanded and improved over the long haul, and won’t be constricted by the limits of its built-in hardware.
