Which are the peculiar winter activities?

Curling, for some quiet excitement

Not exactly what you’d call a nail-biting thriller, but believe it or not, Canadians take this game very seriously. A flat circular stone is allowed to slide on a flat ice path and brooms (yes!) are used to smoothen the course and make the stone travel farther. This is the mildest and most popular among the winter activities listed here. In fact, there are curling clubs everywhere in Canada and a few other countries for those who want a grip on the joys of curling.

Scaling frozen waterfalls

It’s kind of scary yet awesome watching the Niagara Falls thunder down, but it evokes the same feelings when it freezes up in winter. Most people would be content just watching this marvellous sight, but the bravehearts go one step further and climb up the frozen waterfall, which is about as dangerous and challenging as going down the Falls in a canoe!

Digging around for something to do

One of the strangest and definitely unique activities to plan for winter, snow holing takes the cake! As chilly winds blow and snow falls, a team of people dig holes in the ground and tunnel inside to create a snug little burrow just for the fun of it. Sometimes, it is all about discovering previously dug up holes to stay in and experience how it feels to live like a little creature underground.

Shovelling up some excitement

Shovels serve many purposes, but they probably will never have a more exciting role to play than in shovel racing. In this adventurous winter sport, a shovel is transformed into a crude sled to race down steep hills full of snow with only the shovel’s handle to hold on to….if this doesn’t give you an adrenalin rush, what will?

Cooking up fun with adrenaline

Who said that woks are only for making tasty Chinese meals? Woks can easily cook up a delicious winter sport in the name of wok racing. It’s a no-brainer. Take a giant sized wok, sit on it and slide merrily down the snowy slopes and pray that it’ll never turn upside down right on top of you! Sounds like the best adventure sport, right?

Kite power

Special kites attached to skateboards mean people can have hours of fun snow kiting especially on a windy day. Harness pure ‘kite power’ to glide on the snow like a champ. Unlike skiing, snow kiting allows people to go uphill as well as downhill depending on the wind speed and direction. Cool!

Babies’ day out!

While some parents make sure to wrap their babies up in woollen blankets in warm and cozy rooms, others have different ideas. Nordic parents believe that a good old nap out in the freezing cold sub-zero temperature is just what will give babies their rosy cheeks and bonny health. Even -22 degree temperatures don’t deter Nordic parents from setting prams outside for their babies to chill out in!
