India gets its first major eSports league

UCypher, India’s first major eSports league, launches this month with 10 teams battling it out over two seasons each year on PC, console and mobile games. Participating teams have been selected over 1,600 teams across India. The world’s eSports industry is expected to grow from $493 million in 2016 to $1.1 billion in 2019. Currently, only two players from India rank amongst the top 200 on the Dota 2 Southeast Asia leaderboards. The prize pool of the game’s annual tournament, The International, was over $20 million in 2016.

UCypher will consist of ten teams (narrowed down from over 1600) and they will have twelve players each who will compete for points across a variety of different games from PC, console and mobile platforms. The league is starting with a large investment, Screwvala has stated USports has set aside Rs 80-100 crore ($11m-$14m) to spend on UCypher which should go a long way to building a franchise based league.
