Google adds badges to image search

Google’s new feature for image search called ‘badges’ categorizes the content behind images. It aims to connect web users with more than just a list of photos – its results will now highlight when there’s more to discover from the image in question. For example, it will tell you if there’s a recipe available or if the photo is of something you can buy or of GIFs you can share. The feature is available on the mobile web and in the Google app for Android devices and will soon be available on iOS and in browser search.

Google said, “These badges will help you uncover images where next steps or more in-depth information is available — everything from bags to buy, to recipes to try.” The badges currently available include recipes, videos, products, and animated images (GIFs).

These badges are powered off of rich markup schema that you apply to your images on your web pages.
