I am a student of Class XI (Science). My problem is I can’t decide what I want to do in my life. I don’t know which career to pursue after Class 12; I can’t pinpoint the subjects which really interest me. I feel like I don’t know my own self and don’t have any dreams or purpose in life. The only reason I chose Science is because my options will be more as I can choose any course from other streams after XII (which I still am not sure about). How can I get to know more about myself and find out what my real interests and passion are? How can I find that one special dream which will motivate me to work hard every day?
You are quite confused about what your future holds, and it bothers you that you don’t have a sense of purpose in life, yet. It can certainly be quite frustrating when you have to take career decisions but are unsure of the path.
To know your path in life, take a journal, make 3 columns and write down: (1) what you are good at, (2) what you love doing, and (3) which are the things that will earn money. Keep filling this journal even as your mind changes.
I also suggest that you visit your school/college counsellor or a career counsellor. S/he will conduct formal aptitude and interest tests, which will help you to learn more about your strengths and interests, and also the various career options that will suit you, which you can take up and enjoy.
In addition, if you find a career interesting, try and find out more about it by meeting people in that field. Ask them questions about what kind of work they do, and how they took up that line.
Often, it takes some time to unearth the treasure within! And you will certainly find yours!
