How does the flag of the European Union define its ideals?

The identity of an institution, community, or nation is defined mainly by its flag.

The flag of the European Union flaunts a circle of 12 gold stars against a royal blue background. You might wonder if the number 12 has anything to do with the number of member countries. Well, the answer is no, but the circle symbolizes continuity in unity.

The EU flag is definitive of its identity and is a clarion call to all the people of Europe to uphold the spirit of brotherhood and harmony.

The history of the flag dates back to the year 1955. The Council of Europe, one among the EU institutions, first chose this present design for its own use. Later, it exhorted the other institutions to bear the same flag as a mark of their identity.

The flag was eventually adopted as the official emblem by the various institutional leaders of the EU. But what is surprising is that it has never been conferred an official status in any of the European Union treaties!

Today, every EU institution has its own emblem. However, the iconic European Union flag is used by several organizations and identifies the unified European sporting teams under the name of Team Europe.
