What is the official motto of the European Union?

You just read about how the flag of the European Union symbolises the ideals of the organisation. Now, EU has a few other official symbols that are definitive of its goals, one being its official motto: In varietate concordia, adopted in 2000.

In varietate concordia means ‘United in Diversity’. The phrase is in Latin, and was coined by the Nobel Prize laureate Ernesto Teodoro Moneta.

Europe is quintessentially a land of rich and manifold cultures, traditions, and languages. The motto rightly suggests how all Europeans, irrespective of their differences, have unified in the spirit of oneness and brotherhood to work for the peace and prosperity of the continent.

To quote the European Commission, “The motto means that, via the EU, Europeans are united in working together for peace and prosperity, and that the many different cultures, traditions, and languages in Europe are a positive asset for the continent.”

It was on the 19th of June, 2000, that the 24th President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, concluded her official opening speech at Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, introducing the European Union motto.
