When is Europe Day celebrated?

The 9th of May holds great significance in the lives of all Europeans. Every year, Europe celebrates the date as Europe Day to commemorate the historical ‘Schuman Declaration’.

Schuman Declaration refers to the historic speech rendered in Paris in 1950 by Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister. The great free thinker articulated his idea of a novel form of political cooperation in Europe that would make war between its nations a zero possibility. He envisioned moulding a new European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the seed that eventually grew into the great European Union.

Europe Day, which perpetuates peace and unity, is observed as a day for the public. As a mark of tradition, all EU institutions and offices world-wide open their doors to the public. As part of raising awareness about the EU, various activities and events like debates, concerts, visits, and many more, are organized for all age groups.

In compliance with the COVID-19 protocol, the EU institutions have opened a virtual space where the public can access and discover its functioning in the safest ways. Real-time events of shorter duration that ensure sanitary conditions are also conducted ever since the onset of the pandemic.
