The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the EU in the year 2012. The world’s most coveted award was conferred on the EU by the Nobel Committee based on several grounds.
The most prominent among these was the organisation’s defining role in re-establishing peace and reconciliation and advocating for democracy and human rights in post-war Europe. The EU also played a crucial part in pacifying and promoting friendly relations between Germany and France, thereby ending years of hostility between the two.
The Nobel Committee also considered the European Union’s role in strengthening democracy and human rights in Greece, Spain, Portugal, and across Central and Eastern Europe and Turkey in the Middle East.
