Tweet to a plant to help it grow

It is often said that talking to plants may help them grow, and now a museum in the U.S. is putting that popular idea to test with a technological twist. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is investigating the effect of social media on plant growth. It has created an interactive experiment that lets people tweet to a plant located at the museum through a website dedicated to the project.

The hashtag #talktoaplant is being used in the experiment and a robot converts the tweet into speech and reads it aloud to the plant. Visitors to the website talktoaplant.com can actually ‘hear’ the technology at work – as a new tweet comes in, the robot voices it out. Another plant sits in a soundproof room in order to help evaluate the results clearly. The museum will look at the overall growth of both plants as well as the changes in the colour and size of the plants’ leaves. People have so far tweeted words of encouragement to the plant, as well as harsh messages.
