Freeloader

The word is a noun and refers to a person who uses money, food, etc. given by other people, but who gives nothing to them in exchange. It is used in a disapproving manner.

Origin:

The word is said to have been used since 1940 to describe anyone who imposes oneself upon another’s generosity or hospitality without sharing in the cost or responsibility involved. It comes from the words free (without cost) and load (put a burden on).

Example:

We were quite shocked to discover they were a family of freeloaders.
