Currency
The word currency is used to refer to the system of money that is in use in a particular country. It can also be employed to denote the fact or quality of being generally accepted or in use.
Origin
The word, which has been around since the 1650s, was originally used to mean a “condition of flowing”, a sense that is now rare or obsolete. The word derives from Latin currens, which is the present participle of currere, meaning “to run”.
The notion of flowing from one person to another first led to the senses of continuity in public knowledge in 1722 and as medium of exchange, money in 1729.
In the last two centuries, the word has had a number of crests and troughs in terms of usage.
Usage
The U.S. dollar remains one of the strongest currencies worldwide.
