Dissuade is a verb which means to persuade someone to not do or believe something. To dissuade is to discourage someone from taking a particular course of action.

Origin

The word dissuade originated from the 15th Century French ‘dissuader, which in turn came from Latin ‘dissuadere, meaning “to advise against, oppose by argument.”

Usage

Mithun’s parents managed to dissuade him from going abroad for studies.
