Capitulate
The word capitulate is used when someone or a group of people cease to resist an opponent or an unwelcome demand and yield to it. It is different from recapitulate, which denotes summarising and stating again the main points of any argument or information.
Origin
The word, which has been around since the 1590s, is in part from Medieval Latin capitulatus, meaning “to draw up under heads or chapters. This in turn is from capitulum, meaning “chapters”. As the word was often used in terms of surrender, it thus came to mean “yield to an enemy on stipulated terms”.
Usage
The defending forces had no choice but to capitulate once the enemy forces started bombarding the city.
