What makes Nancy Pelosi special?

Nancy Pelosi is the only woman in the history of the United States to serve as the speaker of the House of Representatives. She has held this position since 2019 till date and previously from 2007 to 2011.

Pelosi was born on March 26, 1940 in Baltimore Maryland. She attended the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore and graduated from Trinity College, Washington with a BA in political science in 1962.

She met Paul Francis Pelosi, an American businessman, when she was in college. They married on September 7, 1963 and have 5 children together.

Pelosi’s parents, Annunciata Lombardi and Thomas D’Alesandro Jr were both actively involved in politics. Her father was a Democratic Congressman from Maryland and the Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years. Her brother Thomas too served as mayor of Baltimore.

Pelosi carried on the family tradition and became active in politics from an early age, starting out as a volunteer for the Democratic Party. She rose up the party ranks, serving as a California representative to the Democratic National Committee from 1976 to 1996.

She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013 and was listed in the Forbes list of notable entrepreneurs, leaders and creators over the age of 50, in 2021.
