Mirabai Chanu sets world record in clean and jerk to win bronze medal

Returning to competition after over a year, Mirabai Chanu set a new world record in the women’s 49 kg clean and jerk with a huge lift of 119 kg on April 17. With a snatch lift of 86 kg, she also recorded a personal best of 205 kg to clinch the bronze medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent.

Chanu went from strength to strength as she went on to become the first Indian to win a medal on the opening day of competitions at the Olympics with a best of 87 in snatch and 115 in clean and jerk

Chanu won silver with an aggregate of 202 on July 24. Chanus silver was the first of seven medals that India won at Tokyo 2020, with the remaining six coming in August.

PV Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win multiple metals at the Olympics with her badminton bronze. Lovlina Borgohain won bronze in boxing Indian men’s hockey team won bronze, Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Bajrang Punia won silver and bronze in wrestling, and Neeraj Chopra won gold in javelin throw.
