India win first-ever medal, a silver at World Women’s Team Chess Championship

India won its first ever medal at the FIDE World Women’s Chess Championship by clinching silver in the 2021 event that was held from September 27 to October 2. The event was contested by 12 teams representing chess nations from around the world.

In the preliminary Pool A that comprised six teams, India finished second by winning three matches, drawing one and losing only to Russia.

Indian women defeated Kazakhstan in the quarter-final before pulling off a dramatic victory against a strong Georgian team in the semis. The Russians, however, proved too good once again in the final and the Indian team comprising Mary Ann Gomes, Bhakti Kulkarni, Vaishali R. Tania Sachdev, and Dronavalli Harika had to settle for a deserved silver in the competition.
