Ping-pong ball sized robots

University of Colorado researchers have developed a series of tiny, spherical robots that can morph together into a “liquid that thinks”. The droplets are about the size of a ping-pong ball. Their intelligent design allows them to self-assemble with each other into a variety of shapes. Researchers are hoping to use large amounts of the mini-robots to take on complex projects, such as putting together parts of a large aircraft or telescope.

Prof. Nikolaus Correll, lead researcher of the project, says that the technology is similar in principle to human cells. “Every living organism is made from a swarm of collaborating cells. Perhaps someday, our swarms will colonize space where they will assemble habitats and lush gardens for future space explorers.”
