Did you know a Museum of Prime Ministers is in the making in Delhi?

Museums are always treasure troves of information showcasing objects of historic, scientific, and cultural interest, taking us back in time, facilitating deeper understanding, and enriching us with knowledge.

Legacy of former PMs

The Pradhanmantri Sanghralaya or the Museum of Prime Ministers is spread over an area of 10,000 sqm on the Teen Murti Bhavan campus in New Delhi, next to the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) established in honour of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Built under the Ministry of Culture, the state-of-the-art museum of PMs will throw light on the lives and works of former Prime Ministers of India. It will have on display rare photographs of the leaders, their speeches and writings, video footage of their interviews, and newspaper clippings besides their personal belongings, including those collected from their families.

Digital displays

There will be digital and virtual displays too to kindle visitors’ curiosity and sustain interest. There will be galleries dedicated to the 14 former Prime Ministers, highlighting their contributions and achievements.

The museum has been designed in such a way that there will be space to accommodate future Prime Ministers too. There are plans to operate a café and a souvenir shop at the museum.

The Teen Murti Bhavan was built in the 1930s by the British. Later, it served as the official residence of Pandit Nehru till his demise in 1964. According to reports, though the NMML will continue to remain where it is, Nehru’s legacy will form part of several sections at the new museum.

Announced in 2018

The Museum of Prime Ministers project was first announced by the government in 2018. Though the museum built at a cost of Rs. 270 crore is complete, its inauguration has been delayed owing to the pandemic. It is expected to open its doors to the public SOON.
