What are the meaning, origin, and usage of the word Derby?

The word derby firstly corresponds to an annual flat race for three-year old horses, founded in 1780 by the 12th Earl of Derby and a tradition that continues in England to this day, held annually in late May or early June.

The word has also gained the meaning of any important sporting contest and especially a sports match between two rival teams from the same area.

In North America, the word also denotes a particular type of bowler hat that was first manufactured in the U.S. in 1850. This usage probably stems from the fact that these hats were worn while riding.

Origin: The word, which is also the name of a town and county in England, is from Old English Deorby “deer village”, which has source words meaning deer and homeland. The word is derived from a Scandinavian source.
