What are the meaning, origin, and usage of the word Patchouli?

Meaning: Patchouli is a species of flowering plant in the mint family. It also refers to a heavy perfume made from the fragrant essential oil of the plant.

Origin: The origin of the word is as simple as it is interesting. The name ‘patchouli’ appears to have phonetically evolved from the Tamil word ‘pacchilai’. Pacchai’ is the Tamil word for green, and ‘ilai, for leaf, and pacchilai’ essentially means green leaf.

Usage : My sister simply loved the Patchouli perfume I made for her.
