I want to be a journalist

I’m studying in Std XI and have taken Arts as I have a great interest in writing articles, stories, etc. I just love to read novels. I want to be a journalist in the future. I especially have a keen interest in becoming a celebrity journalist. How can I do that? When do I have to do the course and which are the good journalism institutes in India?

Journalism studies focus on communication, for example, writing, editing, public speaking, photography and video or film-making. There are a number of universities and institutes offering training in journalism. You can do a 3-year Bachelor’s in Journalism/ Mass Communication after 10+2. Some institutes also provide a 1-year course in journalism after graduation. Generally, institutes conduct their own  entrance test followed by an interview, for the selection of suitable candidates.

Some of the good institutes include Xavier Institute of Communications, St Xavier’s College, Mumbai , Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media, Bangalore , Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi, AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

‘Celebrity’ or ‘people’ journalism focuses on the personal lives of people, primarily celebrities. After few years of experience, you can specialize in that field.
