Meaning: Deride is a verb which means to ridicule or express contempt for something you consider to be stupid or of no value.

Origin: It comes from the 16th Century French word ‘derider which in turn comes from Latin ‘deridere’ meaning “to ridicule, laugh to scorn.” (de + ridere = “down” + “to laugh”)

Usage: The leader derided the project for being outdated.

The scientists deride the Flat Earth campaigners.
