What happens to an unopened soft drink when it freezes?

Don’t keep unopened soft drink bottles in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator. They are likely to break.

Why does this happen?

Solids and liquids expand on heating and contract on cooling. Water contracts too, but only when cooled upto 40 degrees C. At this temperature, its density is maximum, and volume minimum. When chilled further, it behaves as it does when heated. Volume increases while density decreases. Because of the increase in volume at freezing point (0 degrees C) tremendous pressure is exerted on the bottle causing it to break.

A soft drink (which contains water, sugar and dissolved gas) will behave approximately the same way as water does upon freezing. It must not be chilled below 40 degree C in a freezer.
