What exactly is smoke?

Did you Know what it consists of and why it is harmful for health. We know that smoke is caused by incomplete burning. But what exactly is smoke? Is it a gas?

Smoke is made up of gases and millions of tiny particles suspended in the gases. As the gases are invisible what we see as smoke is the particles of the substance that is being burned. For example, smoke from the exhaust of a car consists mostly of carbon particles.

In industrial areas and towns, smoke from factories and fumes from motor cars endanger the health of the residents as the smoke particles enter their lungs and air passages and cause breathing problems.

Smoke sometimes combines with fog to form what is called smog. Heavy concentration of smog can be poisonous. About 4.000 people died as a result of smog in London in 1952.
