What is the meaning, origin and usage of the word ‘Compliance’?

Meaning: Compliance means the act of obeying an order or adhering to a rule, such as a policy, standard or specification. In other words, it means doing what one is expected to do, or acting in accordance with another’s will. It is used as a noun.

 Origin: The term can be traced to the Latin verb “complere” meaning “to complete or fulfil”. The original sense was fulfil, accomplish, which later changed to mean fulfil the requirements of or oblige. The word is close to the French verb “complaire” which means “to satisfy or to please”, “comply” + suffix “-ance”. The term, said to have been in use since the late 16th Century, is usually followed by “with”.

Usage: It is the job of the authorities to ensure compliance with the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

All construction work has been executed in compliance with safety regulations.
