Origin: The word originated from the Latin word imperium, which means supreme power, or simply “rule”. In the general sense of “one country’s rule over another, the word was first recorded in 1878. Back in 1826, it was used to refer to “advocacy of empire, devotion to imperial interests, in a Napoleonic context, and also of Rome and of British foreign policy.
