Meaning : The word veteran is used to refer to a person who has had a long experience in a particular field. It is also used to denote an ex-member of the armed forces.

Origin : The word, which has been around since 1500, is from French veteran, from Latin veteranus, meaning “old, aged, that has been long in use”.

The general use of the word to refer to someone who has seen long service in any office or position is attested from the 1590s.

Usage : Having spent her entire lifetime in the field, she is certainly a veteran when it comes to teaching.
