Meaning: Expedient means convenient or immediately advantageous although possibly improper, that is with no regard for ethics. It is used as an adjective and as a noun. As a noun, it corresponds to something such as a method, measure or a strategy adopted to achieve a particular end.

Origin: The term entered Late Middle English in the 14th Century from the Latin verb expedire meaning “advantageous, fit for a purpose.” The noun meaning “something adopted in an exigency so as to achieve a desired result has been in use since the 1650s.

Usage: When something goes wrong, it is expedient to blame it on the leadership.

They considered it expedient not to pay the builder until he finished the work.

The latest announcement looks like a political expedient.
