WHAT IS THE MEANING, ORIGIN, AND USAGE OF WORD ‘VITAMIN’?

Meaning : Vitamin is a countable noun. Vitamins are organic substances found in foods and they are essential to keep our body healthy. They are also available in synthetic forms. Deficiencies of vitamins can lead to specific disorders.

Origin : The term vitamin has been in use since the early 20th Century. It was originally vitamine, coined by Polish biochemist Casimir Funk in 1912. It was derived from the Latin vita meaning life and English amine, as vitamins were originally thought to contain amino acids. Subsequently, the last ‘e’ got dropped from the word.

Usage : Always try to have a diet rich in vitamins.
