Origin: The word has been in use from 1779 to refer to a “complete standstill”. It is arrived at by combining the words “dead”, in its emphatic use, and “lock”. The first attested use of the word “deadlock” is in a play called “The Critic’, written by Irish satirist, politician, playwright and poet Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
Usage: It looked like the two sides would finish in a deadlock before she scored a brilliant goal to hand her side the victory.
