Meaning: The word raucous denotes making or constituting a disturbingly harsh and loud noise.

Origin:  The word, which has been around since 1769, is derived from the Latin word raucus for hoarse. The echoic base of this word is also the base for Sanskit rayati, meaning “barks and ravati, meaning “roars”

Following a steady increase in usage in the first half of the 20th Century, there was a brief blip before its usage soared to its current highs

Usage:  The game between these two schools always witnesses raucous crowds.
