Meaning: The word capitalize refers to writing the letter of the alphabet as a capital or to write the first letter of the word as a capital. It is also used to denote providing companies with capital. When we use it as “capitalize on something” then it corresponds to taking the chance to gain advantages from it.

Origin: The word has been around since 1764 to mean “write or print in capital letters”. The sense of “converting assets to capital” is recorded from 1868. The word is formed by adding the suffix ize to capital.

Usage: She capitalized on her experiences and the knowledge she possesses to land that job.
