What is the meaning, origin, and usage of word ‘Cataclysm’?

Meaning: Cataclysm means a sudden large-scale violent political or social upheaval, catastrophe or devastation. When an event causes great suffering or misfortune, it can be referred to as a cataclysm.

Origin: The term cataclysm originally referred to the biblical Noah’s flood. It is derived from the French word cataclysme, via Latin from Greek kataklusmos meaning ‘deluge, from a combination of kata- ‘down’ and kluzein ‘to wash’. It has been in use in English since the early 17th Century.

Usage: The film turns the spotlight on the cataclysm of the Hiroshima bombing.
