What is the meaning, origin, and usage of word ‘Remission’?

Meaning: Remission refers to pardon, cancellation (of a penalty or something else), or a reduction in the duration of a sentence imposed. In medical parlance, it means a temporary decrease in the severity of disease or disappearance of signs and symptoms of disease.

Origin: The term remission is derived from Old French remission meaning “forgiveness of sins”. This in turn comes from Latin remissio or remittere meaning “send back, relax or let go” from re- “back” + mittere “to send.” The term has been in use in English since the late 14th Century. The medical sense of “temporary respite from disease has been recorded from the early 1600s. From the 18th Century, the term’s sense of “abatement of punishment has been in popular use.

Usage:

  • The prisoner was granted remission of sentence on account of his good behaviour.
  • Parents heaved a sigh of relief when the school announced a remission of tuition fee.
  • Seven cancer patients are in remission
