What is the meaning, origin and usage of word ‘Aver’?

Meaning: Used as a verb, aver corresponds to declaring, maintaining or claiming something to be true. In other words, asserting something in a convincing manner.

Origin: The term aver comes from Old French averer which in turn is based on Latin ad meaning “cause to be” and verus meaning “true”. The word came to be used in English in the late 14th century in the sense “declare something to be true.” And this meaning of the word continues to remain today.

Usage: Even though the country is in an economic crisis, its leader avers that the country is doing well. John avers that there will be chaos if he loses the game.
