What are the specialties of Haiti?

Haiti is in the western one-third of the island of Hispaniola between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.

This small, tropical country lies west of the Dominican Republic and is south of the island of Cuba. The capital of the country is Port-au-Prince. It is the second-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.

Haiti became an independent state in 1804, after gaining its sovereignty from France. It is the second country in the Americas, after the United States, to free itself from colonial rule. Haiti is the most mountainous nation in the Caribbean.

The government of Haiti is a semi-presidential republic, wherein the President of Haiti is head of state elected directly by popular elections. The Prime Minister acts as head of government and is appointed by the President.

Haiti is a charter member of the United Nations, having joined on 24th October 1945. The country has the lowest Human Development Index in the Americas.
