Why is the classic book ‘Pollyanna’ called inspirational?

The title character of the book ‘Pollyanna’ is Pollyanna Whittier, a young orphan who goes to live with her Aunt Polly. Aunt Polly is not fond of children. She does not want to take Pollyanna in, but feels it is her duty to her late sister. Sending the servant, Nancy, to fetch Pollyanna from the station, and then banishing her to the hot attic room, Aunt Polly is always negative to Pollyanna. But good-hearted Nancy readies the room for Pollyanna and loves her.

However, Pollyanna always finds a way to be positive and finds a way to be glad about her situation. Pollyanna’s cheerful ways begin to win over the neighborhood. Pollyanna’s philosophy of life centres on what she calls ‘the glad game’, the game involved always finding something to be glad about.

‘Pollyanna’ is a 1913 novel by the Eleanor H. Porter. The title character’s name became a popular term for someone with the same very optimistic outlook. The book was such a success, that Porter soon produced a sequel, ‘Pollyanna Grows Up’ (1915).
