What are dicots, and how are they classified?

Among the variety of plants, the group of flowering plants that have two embryonic plants that have two embryonic leaves for the seeds are known as dicots. Dicots can be divided into six main categories- roses, daisies, cotton, pinks, witch hazels and magnolias.

If asked to name the most exquisite of flowers, many people would suggest the rose flower. Roses are found all over the world and there are more than 50,000 species of the plant available today! Dicots include several of the largest plant families in the world. Roses, spurges and peas are some of them. The world’s largest flower, the rafflesia, belongs to this group. These plants have flowers with separate petals and many stamens- a flower’s male reproductive organ that produces pollen.

Daisies have more than 60,000 species of plants.These flowers have joined petals.These flowers have joined petals with stamens attached to the inside of the flower. Potato and mint are other major plant families such as cotton, cocoa, tea, papaya, cucumber and pumpkins too belong to this group.

Pinks are the family to soft-stemmed plants with colourful flowers. The family includes spinach and bougainvillea. There are more than 10,000 species found in this group.

Witch hazels typically have small flowers. These plants are usually found to be soft stemmed. However, big trees such as oaks, birches and beeches are also part of this group.

Magnolias have simple flowers with sepals and petals often arranged in a spiral form. There are both big and soft stemmed plants in this group. Water lilies and buttercups also belong to this group. In fact, more than 10,000 species belong to this group.
