Why do roots grow away from light?

Much like the members of our body, the parts of a plant have various functions. While the leaves of the plant collect the sunlight and make sugars to feed the roots, the roots absorb water and nutrients to feed the leaves. These parts feed each other, and thus help the whole plant develop and stay healthy. The leaves, branches and trunk of plants are visible and add to its aesthetic appeal. However, roots stay hidden under the soil. Scientists opine that as far as roots are concerned, they grow the best in the darkness of the soil.

Plants have certain hormones called auxin that control their growth. When auxin in the roots are exposed to light, they reduce their growth. Therefore roots usually grow away from the light source. This is also the reason for plants growing straight up even when on a slope!
