What gives today’s money its value?

Nothing – or at least nothing we can reach out and touch. Today’s currency is worth something only because we believe it’s worth something. Its value is influenced by a number of factors, such as the cost of borrowing money and the rise or fall of the stock market. As a result, your cash might be worth a little more or less tomorrow. It wasn’t always this way. The currency of some countries in Europe and the United States was once based on the value of gold. But this “gold standard” was abandoned nearly 90 years ago.
