Can animals change their spots?

Yes, dozens of animals can alter their appearance to match the season or the scenery. The fur of the arctic fox, for instance, shifts from brown to white in the wintertime. But the fox has nothing on the disguise mastery of octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Color- and texture-shifting cells in their skin let them mimic rocks and morph into corals. Toxic-to-the tummy mollusks called nudibranchs rely on (poisonous animals often bear bright, colorful makings as a warning to predators). And while chameleons can also shift the color of their skin at will, they do it to communicate rather than to blend in with their surroundings.
