Why do polar bears have white fur?

The largest land carnivore might look white and fluffy, but its fur isn’t white at all. Each hair is actually see-through, with a hollow core that traps heat. The fur only looks white because of the way it reflects light
(just like snowflakes look white even though they’re transparent). If you were brave – and foolish – enough to brush aside the polar bear’s dense coat, you’d see that its skin is actually as black as its nose!

Polar bears like to keep clean because it helps the insulating properties of their fur. Fur that is dirty, matted, and wet does not work as well as an insulator. After feeding, polar bears will usually wash themselves by taking a swim or rolling in the snow. They also roll in the snow to cool off; despite the harsh conditions of their environment, polar bears can be prone to overheating.
