Why do mammals have fur?

Warm-blooded mammals evolved with fur to retain body heat and act as a trap for smelly chemicals, called pheromones that convey all sorts of information about each animal. All mammals have some type of hair – even marine mammals such as manatees and dolphins (dolphins are born with whiskers that eventually fall out).

Some mammals develop an extra coat of fur to survive the cold winter months in their natural habitat. Bacterian camel, from the deserts of eastern Asia, is one such mammal. It grows a thick coat of fur in the fall, which keeps it warm during the extremely cold winters. As spring approaches, this winter coat is shed in patches, and a lighter, thinner coat grows in its place.
