Why do humans have fur only atop their heads?

That’s not quite true. We all have fine hairs on our bodies (and thicker clumps of hair in our armpits and other places to catch those stinky pheromones). But our patchy pelts look bald compared with the lustrous fur of felines, polar bears, or sea otters (which have the thickest hair on Earth). Scientists aren’t certain why humans evolved to become less hairy in the past six million years or so, but they have a few theories. Primates may have shed their fur as they adapted to life on sweltering savannas (as opposed to the cool forests of our earlier ape ancestor). Modern humans don’t need body hair to stay warm. That’s what clothes are for.
