This special species of bat, found in the night skies above the jungles of Central and South America, dines exclusively on the blood of pigs, chickens, and other farm animals. Zoologists suspect that vampire bats evolved from ancient bats that ate bloodsucking insects. The bloodthirsty bats developed adaptations that made it easier to slurp blood directly from their victims. These adaptations include heat sensors in the nose, a grooved tongue made for lapping, razorlike teeth, and an anti-clotting substance in vampire bat spit, which keeps a victim’s blood flowing smoothly for the feast. The substance’s name: Draculin.
